The idea is to still go after the dealers/manufacturers etc. , but stop clogging up the justice system with drug addicts and use the marijuana tax dollars to pay for drug treatment and such. There’s more to it, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.
The “war on drugs” has been an abject failure. At least this way there will be more help available for people who actually want to turn their life around and get their shit together. Instead of our taxes going to warehouse a bunch of junkies in a revolving door system that rarely brings about anything like redemption.
A lot of them come out only having learned how to do bigger crimes.
Something needs to change. Hopefully more good than bad comes from it.
