I think the schools need to get more parental involvement in choosing the the curriculum for example if half the parents of the school disapproves of what is being taught it should be tossed out and replaced with something appropriate.

@Shaross I completely agree. Im watching my school board for that reason, but I have been disappointed to find that, like so many other things that matter today, most parents are not interested in being invested.

@Shaross The problem is that too many parents do not take the time or effort to be involved in what's being taught to their kids, and frankly many don't even care. School is daycare. How may parents will really sit down and peruse the curriculum to make an educated decision? My guess, not many.

No way would I want my state to choose lol. I'm a hostage to a terribly run state. I wouldn't trust them with anything. Perhaps we let counties choose, or even individual districts.

@Squeaker You’re exactly right. I see that here in my county, too. It’s like pulling teeth. Many (if they can) think private school is the answer. Transfer the kid, check back out.
Problem is private school kids will be mowed over by the subjects of public school- much like conservatives on college campuses the last 7 years.

@mercedes I agree parents need to be more involved. I took my kids out of public and into private. The school was really small when we started so Parent involvement in everything was required to make it work. The curriculum wasn’t ever an issue .at the beginning of the year during open house they display every book their child will use , we have access to a syllabus and topics like sex Ed are left to the parents. If any parent had objections to anything at all they are heard , especially the loud parents. Politics are not allowed . Just the subjects in a truthful manner. Public schools should take note.

@Squeaker Our school lays out the books the kids will be using that year we use a online program that shows the syllabus for each teacher along with homework assignments. If anyone had objections they can voice their opinions in the PTA meeting. We can go straight to principle to complain . My oldest kid went to public and we all hated everything about it. The school is small and private , so I understand implementing these ideas would be more difficult in a bigger public school . I would say the first step would be to gather parents who have the same complaints take it to school board and be a thorn in their rear end until something changes. One thing I can give the left credit for is they are aggressively persistent .

@Shaross You are right about the left being persistent. However, I think there is persistence from both ideologies, but only the most fervent are persistent. The rest in the middle do not pay much attention. That leaves the decisions to be made by the extremes of either side. That would concern me.
To use your school as an example, how many parents do you believe actually review the curriculum? I'm willing to bet only the very involved that are worried about the indoctrination of the other ideology. Then, how many of those are willing to pester the school or become active in PTA? Unfortunately, call me a cynic, but I don't believe the average person cares to be that involved. It's very sad because our children are our legacy and the future of the world.

@Squeaker My school has about 220 students so it is easier for everyone to get the chance to look it over. Parents are paying a tuition so they naturally are more involved. It is a Christian school so the dynamics are different as well. I don’t want extremes either . In my opinion too many conservatives have become too complacent or afraid to speak up. I totally understand the public problem and it won’t be an easy task . Hopefully changes can be made sooner rather than later. I have a gran baby that is almost two and I worry about her future my daughter isn’t a liberal but kids can be easily influenced in school.
