Are Alternative Social Media Platforms Worthwhile?
Conservatives have grown upset with political censorship and deplatforming. While some leftists and centrists have lost their accounts as well, it’s undeniable that those who voice right-wing views have borne the brunt of the banhammer. Mainstream platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, are increasingly acting like publishers rather than platforms – hence the push for such companies to have their CDA Section 230 protections revoked. With such a fix unlikely to happen anytime soon, many have begun migrating to alternative platforms.
In the last three days, Parler has added an impressive 300,000 new users. Gab has existed for some time and it’s guaranteed that similar platforms will sprout up as censorship escalates. As such, it’s worth considering the pros and cons of moving to alternative platforms.
