At what point does taxation become wealth redistribution?

Show Comments
Hide Comments

Good question. I don't know.

Whenever taxes become so high that the economy begins to crumble on itself. Also, the point in which the government is handing out a "living wage" to every citizen.

I think it becomes wealth redistribution at the point when you are paying in more than you are receiving

@Chris81 Agreed!

As soon as you're taxed.

I used to be of that stance but realistically there are a lot of things that tax dollars pay for that I benefit from like roads, emergency services and military protection

Intellectual self-governance is a fancy way of saying freethinking. The ability to view the world around you and come to your own conclusions even if it goes against the common consensus.

It is this trait that those who would control you fear the most

Scientists estimate Homosapien has been around for 200,000 years. Most of our technological advances have happened in the last 200 years.

Do you think it’s possible that human beings have advanced this far in the past only to lose all that Knowledge?

Show Comments

I think our archaeology would have something to say on that. I like the concept though. I sometimes wonder if we've flown just a bit too close to the sun as a species. We became enlightened, but maybe yoo much. Would a significant dumbing down of our species help us not to make this planet into a prison of our own making to hunankind, or would hogher intelligence do that? At this point, what will make our species survive longer? Being more simple, or more complex?

Show Replies
Hide Replies

As far as archaeological proof there is some. There are many structures that were built in ancient times that we could not re-create today

Another factor to consider is the majority of our population lives fairly close to the ocean. During an Ice Age the coast would have been many miles further out to sea and underwater at this point

@Chris81 ...missing link?

I remember playing a very story-driven video game called Xenogears that talked about all this. You played a character that lived in what was someone living in what seemed like Medieval times, but the world was also abuzz with people digging up technologies to use to advance their civilization. Oh, and there's a type of human civilization that has kept all of their history and technology that tends to influence the events of these primitive peoples to their end, without them knowing. Insert very 1984/soylent green/East versus West Berlin kind of themes in this advanced civilization, propaganda, etc and you can kind of see where the developers were going with the story. There's also strong religious themes in the game. And psychological theory added to the story. It's a lot to take in, given all that at once.

I have a collection of Stanley classic 99 retractable razor knives. They are cheap and have no collectible value. When I was growing up my dad always had one and for several years after he died I couldn’t pass one in a store without picking it up.

Do you collect anything with no collectible value? If so what is the reason?

I had a collection of straws from places I visited when I was growing up. I wrote the place and date just as a reminder. Cheaper than a baby spoon collection.

Great for opening my amazon boxes 😀

I have a huge box of Chinese cookie fortunes.
Not one warned about the WuFlu.

I have a completely worthless collection of electronic hotel keys. I had an amazing collection of swizzle sticks until I finally threw them away.

Is it OK to buy votes?

Do you think government programs such as socialized healthcare and welfare count as buying votes?

If so do you think recipients of such things should waive their right to vote?

Show Comments
Hide Comments

This is thoughtful and I need more time.

Definitely an interesting question. I would consider it as a form of buying votes. But I don’t think that it is directly buying votes.

Let’s take free college tuition and debt forgiveness. Many people may vote for Democrats because of that policy, but many more will benefit from it that never voted for it. So should the people that didn’t vote for it, but benefitted from it, not be allowed to vote?

Many people that are on welfare, for example, have probably never voted before. Definitely an interesting thought though. But I’m rambling so I’ll leave it there. 😂

I’m not really sure how I feel about it LOL just trying to get people to talk. I think it’s more of a case that the government shouldn’t be allowed to do it and less of a case that people shouldn’t be allowed to vote if they accept it

Do you think people on government assistance that have no job should be able to vote? I’m not talking about disability.

Land owners only. Nobody else is invested, except in freebies.

So people with jobs paying income tax that rent their house or apartment shouldn’t get a vote?

@Chris81 Well, since we are on the subject, I don’t believe in income tax either. Lol. I prefer a national sales tax.

@robertleon I live somewhere with a state sales tax. It seems to me like it’s a poor tax because people with lower income spend a higher percentage of their income.

Before federal income tax there used to only be property tax. When this country first started only the land owners could vote but they were the only ones funding the country

@e9609d556a9340c8af3389ce56e4fb6c I would accept that as an alternative. National sales tax is a tax on spending. More you spend, more the government gets a bite. If you save a lot of your income, you don’t get punished (or inversely, you get rewarded).

Benefite of a sales tax:

1. Immediately feel an increase or decrease in federal taxes when you go grocery shopping.

2. Shrink the IRS. They only need to go after businesses, not individuals.

3. Individuals do not have to file taxes anymore. They get taxed on a daily basis.

4. Save a ton of money because now IRS is greatly reduced in size and overhead.

5. It’s fair. The metric is simple: spend money, pay taxes. Save money, don’t.

The problem I see with a land tax is that it would preclude the government from getting a slice of commerce. In the old days, I imagine they had a land tax because everybody was a farmer (but maybe I’m wrong about that). I assume a tax on land was really/partly a tax on produce from that land.

@Jeffreywernick care to comment?

@Chris81 P.S. I also live in a sales tax state (Florida).

Absolutely. It’s one of our most fundamental rights. As long as they are legal citizens...

So hypothetically let’s say you live in a household run democratically. There are three people that live in the house. You are the only one that has income and the only one who does chores. Now it’s time to vote on the household budget and you are outvoted on how to spend the money.

Does that change your opinion at all?

@Chris81 I understand what you’re saying and I don’t like it, but the constitution does not restrict it.

If I’m in that house I stop supporting the freeloaders. That’s part of the problem.

@ExposingLibsBS Thanks for the interaction. I don’t really know where I stand on the subject I’m just trying to start conversations. I know when our country first started only landowners could vote

@Chris81 It’s a great topic. It’s worth discussion. We’ve made it far too easy for people to be noncontributory to society. I believe much of the problem starts with that. Low expectations and high entitlements is a disaster.

Depends people that are perpetually on it shouldn't be allowed to. There are people who have used government assistance and then got off of it after using what it was for.

Every legal citizen gets a vote! Remember the good old days when women and blacks didn’t get to vote. . .i don’t either, I’m too young for that! Seriously, that’s the point that each person has INALIENABLE RIGHTS WETHER THEY HAVE MONEY OR NOT, OR ARE PART OF ANY GROUP!!!

@Chris81 OF COARSE NOT, A HOUSEHOLD ISN’T A COUNTRY! Further, why wouldn’t you tell the others in the household to help out??? Plus, if you owned the house; you’d set the rules!

@Tomolswfski It was just a hypothetical. Trying to get people to look at it a different way. If you change the word household to country and scale up the amount of people the principle is still the same.

I don’t really know how I feel about the subject I’m just trying to start conversations

I think the point here is too much fraud. As a disabled person suffering from the uncontrolled pain crisis forced to a life of low income and pain. I here many stories of fraud and abuse. Young able body adults Sec. 8 welfare food stamps. Healthcare Receiving 1600. A month to help with a friend or relative. Multiply that by several family members. Draining our country. With talks of increasing it I feel it’s a bribe for these lazy criminals. And it’s passed on through generation. Makes me very angry. I would give a limb to not feel my pain and work to receive an honest living.

@Chris81 I get it but we have this thing called the constitution. It’s cut and dry. Don’t get me wrong I loath people who suck off the government and are lazy.

@Rebeccaweber25 What if I told you the constitution actually doesn’t grant that right. Voter rights are covered in the 15th 19th and 26th amendment and nowhere does it say that you can’t exclude citizens based off of government handouts.

Handouts from the government to those who choose to milk the government should not get to vote as they do not contribute to anything but accept their freebies but if they are legal citizens then they by all rights have every right to vote regardless if we agree with it or not. Every legal citizen has the right to vote unless they are a convict, then they should and I believe they do, lose many rights. Rights are not a given, they are a privilege! Just my 2 cents! I’m so sick of people telling me that America was never great. The funny thing is if they lived in any other country they wouldn’t even be able to say it.

Show Comments

It's easy to say that if you're middle class or above, because you can just stay in your lily white suburban community without ever talking to someone who experienced real struggle in their life. In other words, they are "coming from a place of privilege." Meanwhile the people who love this country the most are first generation immigrants. I actually worked with a guy from Africa a few weeks ago who was almost demanding that I see more of the world, to go anywhere, so that I can see how great we have it here. My own political position notwithstanding, I really do want to see more if the world, from the great tourist spots to the more horrific parts. I'm sure it would be a good experience, and to help keep me grounded in reality.

I like your Dad

@Veeness I'm sure he'd be one of your best buds if you knew him.

@MKrump Is he quick-witted, like you?

@Veeness Sarcasm and a quick wit. My wife can't take me alone, but when I take her to see my dad? Well damn, she gets a double dose of it.
She used to hate the sarcasm and fart humor, but she's slowly being converted to this jackassery over time.
You see, she was the rich daughter of a well respected man with several businesses. Real upper-crust type. It's been nearly 4 years but we're still adjusting to living together.

@MKrump Nice catch!
And way to make her laugh. 👍🏼

@Veeness I don't know what kind of response I elicit more from her: a laugh, or a groan followed by her telling me to shut up. Sometimes she just preemptively tells me to shut uo before knowing what I'm even saying, obviously erring on the side of "sarcasm." I must be doing just a bit too much of that.

My new favorite thing to do is drop my pants while she's doing her remote college laptop sessions from home and rest the tip of my weiner on the top of the laptop abd just stare her in the eye, not blinking, not smiling, until she looks away from the teacher and laughs or waves me away.

Gotta make your own fun, sometimes.
