They weren't absentee ballots, they were vote by mail ballots. The differenceis that an absentee ballot needs to be requested and goes through a verification process to ensure the individual is the valid voter. Vote by mail ballots were sent in mass with no chain of custody set in place.

“Winner Take All” with respect to Electoral College votes is illegal under Our Constitution.
